print pretty hand-stitched notebooks

{i made this}

I found a great tutorial over at Jen and Jake on how to make a hand-stitched notebook. It took me about 3 tries to get the method right. The trick is to only pre-fold the outer cover, not the inside pages, after the book is stitched THEN fold in half and put something heavy like Martha Stewart’s Encyclopedia of Crafts on it for a day or so to get it to lay flat.

I printed the covers 2-sided and there is a book plate on the inside front cover. The notebooks are 40 pages (front and back). Once I have perfected my hole punching and stitching skills, I’ll add notebooks like these to the shop. The best part of this project was that I needed a tapestry needle and, somehow, I had a whole package of them in my sewing stash that I do not even remember buying! Don’t you love it when that happens? Happy February everybody!

arc + print pretty

Do you remember me telling you a couple weeks ago about the arc notebook system? (probably not, but I totally forgive you) It’s from Staples and a perfect compliment to the printable planners and organizers I have in the shop. Buy the notebook shell and an arc paper punch and you are on your way to making a notebook/planner that is completely unique to your needs. Speaking of which, the NEW planner designs are ready for viewing. Two patterns (chevron and arrows), three colorways each, more page options and you can now request special sizes —-> A4 and 5.5″ x 8.5″ at no extra charge.

Here’s a peek at what the “wove” printable planner looks like in the 5.5″ 8.5″ size (in an arc notebook system, no less!!) Special thanks to Etsy buyer, Elizabeth, for being the most lovely guinea pig on earth and also for sending me this pic!

instagram photoshop actions by Daniel Box

I was online last night looking to see if Instagram is ever going to come out with an app for Android. The answer was yes (yay!) but no hard date was given for release (boo!). So, today I searched around for instagram-like photoshop filters and lookey what I found. Daniel Box kindly whipped us up a batch of instagrammy ps actions. They’re available for download (free) on his blog. So sweet of him, yes? Of course I tested them out for you… on my face (I tell ya, the sacrifices I make…). It was pretty painless (you’re welcome). I’d show the “before” picture for comparison but it’s waaaay too horrific. Trust me.

Maybe photoshop really IS magic?

pin therapy + free printable

image via hairbrainedschemes

I’ve been neglecting my pin boards lately. Pinterest tends to put me in a better mood, so I plan to visit once a day (1 hour limit) and be, you know, inspired. I’ve upped my caffeine dosage and I am actually feeling a bit more alive, maybe I’ll add it back into my routine? Maybe I’m even awake enough to post valentine printables in the shop? Who knows (I hope so). I’m planning (always planning) on adding journals to the mix of patterned goodies this year. So, that’s exciting (for me, anyway – wink).

It has occurred to me that the blog needs a better posting schedule (what, you don’t enjoy my ramblings?). I put together a worksheet for myself and I’m making it available here for you. I’m going to pad mine (totally addicted to padding compound). Oh, and the DIY planners are getting an overhaul! New patterns, new sizes. I had some ideas spark last night on the drive home (I’m a terrible driver). Click the image below to download the blog planner.

last minute gifts

(shown: shuggah, and printable gift tags)

It’s about that time when you realize you need to whip up a hostess gift or that you forgot about secret santa at work…here’s 2 quick fixes. The first is shuggah (sugar scrub) the other is printables! What the heck is shuggah? It’s my sugar scrub recipe, made with foaming bath butter, organic brown sugar, white granulated sugar and a fragrance oil or two. Some people get really complex with their sugar scrubs, turning their nose up at anything less than raw ingredients whipped to perfection – but I’m super lazy (and I bombed Chemistry class). I find that as long as you make your scrubs in small batches, give it an expiration date, be mindful of allergies / sensitive skin and tell people NOT to eat it, it’s fine. This scrub is NOT intended for the bath tub…slippery! I keep mine on the kitchen sink for 2 months, then toss. It’s usually gone by then anyhow. I have two bowls, a measuring cup and mixing utensils specifically labeled: NOT FOR FOOD. You should too. I use 4 oz. Ball wide mouth canning jars, available at the grocery store, but if you prefer plastic cosmetic jars, suit yourself. Glass can break, so it is safer to use the plastic…but did I mention I am lazy?…and I have all these jars leftover from last year’s scrubtasticalness?

Here is the “recipe” or “how I throw everything into a bowl and make magic…”

16 oz Foaming Bath Butter (doesn’t smell great, hence the fragrance oil)

2 cups organic brown sugar

3 cups granulated white sugar

fragrance oil of choice (I used Dark Chocolate and Cream Cheese Frosting together to make “chocolate cupcake”)

large spoon or rubber spatula

2 plastic mixing bowls (one large, one small)

jar / container to hold scrub

This recipe makes about five 4 oz jars of scrub.

Plop (that’s a technical term) foaming bath butter into large mixing bowl, then granulated sugar. Stir everything until sugar  is incorporated into the bath butter. Then add organic brown sugar, mix well. I portion a little bit (about 4 oz) into a separate smaller mixing bowl where I add small amounts of fragrance oil until I get a good balance. Add fragrance slowly, if you feel like you added too much, then go to the larger mixing bowl and get more unscented mix to balance it out. Make sense? When you’ve got it smelling all yummy take a small amount into your hand and test it in the sink. If it doesn’t feel “sugary” enough add more sugar. Portion the resulting ideal mix into your container. It’s ready to be wrapped and gifted. My scrub doesn’t really leave your hands smelling chocolatey, I like it that way. This scrub is NOT intended for use on the FACE. I pretty much just use it on my hands.

If you are an organic everything type person or only into natural ingredients, this recipe is not for you. You can alternatively use grapeseed oil (or any nut oil), organic sugars, kitchen spices, essential oils all that fancy stuff. Plenty of natural sugar scrub recipes out there. Have you heard of this new-fangled thing they call Google? ;) I’m currently working on a few natural scrubs that incorporate coconut oil, I’ll share them once they have been tested/perfected.

Alright, if you are still with me in this post you deserve a present! And I just happen to have one right here…printable gift tags! I love printables, you can use your new best friend, Google, to search online for all kinds of adorable, unique, useful, FREE printables. From recipe cards to calendars to gift tags like the ones I have for you below. You’ll also find Pinterest is a great resource for printables of all sorts. I love Pinterest. Click the image below to download this year’s tags. There are 4 folding tags (fox, deer, squirrel and birdies) set up on one 8.5″ x 11″ sheet.

tiny tour

Well, the decorating is done, almost all the gifts are ready to be unwrapped (Mac got to open a few of his early). Just need to make sure I have everything I need to make dinners on Saturday and Sunday. My place is tiny, so I have all my Christmas decor spaced through the downstairs (living room and dining room area). I did put out some lights on the exterior and my wreath on the front door but didn’t take any pictures yet. If you click the image above you can see the larger view. I have a thing for snowmen. I’ll be knitting my fingers off for the rest of the week making some last minute gifts for my work family.

I’ll have a few more free downloads for you before Christmas.

gifted magazine 2011

My weekend was a blur. I worked, cleaned, slept, got up, and did it all over again. Mac and I enjoyed a heated discussion about when he is allowed to chew the living room rug (we settled on somewhere between never and always) and then we sat him down for some holiday pictures. Oh, and I came to the conclusion that I don’t like cookies all that much… but I like how the house smells when I baked them. Cookie scented candles don’t cut it.

Don’t hate me. Anybody want to eat these cookies?

I thoroughly enjoyed looking through this year’s Gifted Magazine’s Holiday Gift Guide. A lot of my favorites were featured and I’ve acquired a few more. There are free goodies in there for you! Ez did a great job, go check it out. I’m nearly finished with a major knitty project, just have to bind off and block. Then it’s on to the next. I feel like making pom poms for some reason; they are really cute as gift toppers, you know. I’ve got a free printable coming your way. If you haven’t sent out your Christmas cards yet or always wait until the last minute, I’ve got a semi-quick fix. And, the gift-away will also happen this week. You can probably guess what is it (have you visited my shop yet?). This blog is read by tens of people so your chances of winning are pretty good – just sayin’.  And… if you are looking for cute tiny clothes pins, I found some here at Besotted Brand.
